A PIN, Postal Index Number or PIN code is a six-digit code used in India's postal system to facilitate the sorting and delivery of mail.
The PIN system was introduced on 15 August 1972 and on 15 August 2022, the PIN system celebrated its 50th anniversary, and is managed by the Indian Postal Department.

PIN structure
The first digit of the pincode indicates the region, the second digit indicates the sub-region, and the third digit indicates the sorting district within that region. The last three digits represent the specific post office or delivery area within that district.
